Cut The Tie Podcast with Thomas Helfrich

Security expert and combat veteran Robert Brenizer returns to Cut The Tie for a raw, no-fluff conversation about cutting ties with ego, building a battle-tested security company, and becoming your best self for the people who count. Rob shares lessons from combat, entrepreneurship, and personal transformation.

About Robert Brenizer:

Robert is the founder of Spectre Defense Solutions, a boutique private security firm offering customized security plans and services. A decorated combat veteran with a Bronze Star for Valor, Rob transitioned from military service to private security, bringing real-world experience to every client engagement.

In this episode, Thomas and Rob discuss:

  • Cutting the Tie to Ego
    Rob opens up about the pivotal moment after his military career when he realized ego was blocking his personal and professional growth.
  • Building a Quality-First Security Company
    He shares how Spectre Defense Solutions focuses on real skills, real experience, and a client-first mindset—not just hiring anyone with "credentials."
  • Risk Management Done Right
    Rob breaks down the TATMP method: Threat Assessment, Threat Management Plan, and how proactive security beats reactive regret.
  • The Dark Side of the Security Industry
    He warns about unqualified operators, undercut pricing, and the dangers clients face when they prioritize cost over competence.

Key Takeaways:

  • Self-Awareness is Step One
    Growth starts with destroying illusions about yourself and focusing on who you want to become.
  • You Get What You Pay For
    In security, cheap services often mean lower skill, less care, and higher risk.
  • Build Teams Without Big Egos
    A true professional isn’t just competent—they’re self-aware, collaborative, and client-focused.
  • Be Proactive, Not Reactive
    Security must be planned before problems occur, not after damage is done.

"You can talk the talk all you want. But when the time comes, can you walk it?"— Robert Brenizer

I wanted to bring you back on and hit this hard. Do you wanna introduce yourself again and what your company does? Yeah. So, my name is Rob or Robert Brenizer,
2
0,00:42,000 --> 0,01:03,000
and, I own a private security company called Spectre Defense Solutions. And we are a boutique private security company that offers custom tailored, security plans for each of our unique clients' needs.
3
0,01:03,000 --> 0,01:10,000
And I always ask people this question of, you know, what's your power statement? Why do people pick you? We we we have developed
4
0,01:10,000 --> 0,02:01,000
although we are a younger company, we have developed a reputation, on based on two things. Number one, our care for quality of of service. You know, I security often gets, security guards. Right? Get get often get kind of a bad rap because, you know, they're underpaid and, you know, they may be sleeping on the job or they don't know what they're doing or, and when we really care, about our quality of service. And that comes from, our our backgrounds being battle tested, and being competent and surely, totally serving the the client.
5
0,02:01,000 --> 0,02:08,000
Yeah. And you got a lot of experience in the ground. Exactly.
6
0,02:08,000 --> 0,04:19,000
Yeah. I mean, I'm a retired combat vet, multiple combat tours, bronze star medal for valor, stellar career, in in the military and then into the private sector. Many year couple decades of of experience. And and you know what? Experience is is is great, but it's that, like I said, being battle tested that kinda separates us from our peers. And and the quality of service is one aspect that we have developed a reputation on, but the other is just our our vast capability set. And what I mean by that is, you know, security is a is a very vague term. It's a very vast term. There's a lot of things that one could do in the security world. You know? We have physical security. We have cybersecurity. We do training, and we do consulting as well. As far as the physical side of the house goes, we do everything from what I call tier one, protection, which is your your close protection, your executive protection, PSD type stuff, more higher threat, higher profile type, security work, all the way down to, you know, what I call tier three, which is your not so sexy type of security, which is, you know, that kind of mall cop stuff, apartments, condos, warehouses, things like that, and and everything in between. We do a lot of what and tier two is what, you know, we do a lot of, hostile terminations, workplace violence situations, events, VIP type stuff. We do our own surveillance operations, our own covert operations. We do our own TSCM, which is technical surveillance countermeasures, which is basically bug sweeps. We do our own advanced procedures. We do security driving. If there's if there's a scope of if if defense or security is in the scope of work, we can and and do perform it.
7
0,04:19,000 --> 0,05:00,000
Yeah. It's, you know, in in along your way, you know, you know, you're even, like, as you become a fragmented in industry of my understanding is there's a lot of people who know what they're doing, and there's a whole lot more that don't. Or worse, they think they know what they're doing, and they're using credentials like, oh, I was on a special team or I was on a in the army or and, like, they weren't, like, part of a special teams. They weren't part of teams at all. And they're out there trying to do security, and you're like, oh my gosh. Like, your people are buying falsity. Anyway, long winded saying, like, you've had to come to realize, you know, you're tied to cut. What was the thing you realized that you needed to do to take take it to the next level?
8
0,05:00,000 --> 0,06:19,000
You know, look. Everyone thinks that they don't want security, or even need security until they do. And and by that time, it's too late. In my profession, the real ones understand that this is a proactive versus reactive industry. And in order to mitigate risk, you know, we must first identify what that risk is. Spector u utilizes a method called the TATMP, which is threat assessment, threat management plan. And, again, each client is unique, and their own individual security needs are unique. Upon initial consult, consultation, we determine the client's risk level as well, as if the client does indeed have a threat, and then what that threat is, why that threat is, and and what that threat's capabilities are. And and one then once that's done, then we determine the best methods to mitigate said threat or risk, in the most, budget friendly way.
9
0,06:19,000 --> 0,06:47,000
Did that answer your question? Or Yeah. Absolutely. I mean, like, you gotta Rephrase the question. I mean, the private it's it's well, it it answers in the way that that you had identified, like, tied and I say the tied to cut from a metaphor that we're we're what you were gonna do to be different. And what you what you had was and and I know this is we talked like you just described. You had to come with, like, a methodology that actually worked Okay. Based on your your history of what your your experience was.
10
0,06:47,000 --> 0,09:04,000
I get you. I understand. And and, yes, and like like we talked about last time, like I I mentioned last time, you know, the thing that kinda I had to separate or or cut the tie, I guess, and and separate myself from my peers. You know, like I said in, the last episode, I kinda I gotta go back to the beginning, and say, you know, becoming my whole true self. I mentioned earlier about, being very particular about who I hire. There's so many, you know, alpha males, in the in this industry out there. You know, think people I I call them wannabes or try hards. So many folks out there that talk the talk, but when it comes time to play the game, don't walk the walk. And then, of course, you have several, that are most definitely capable, you know, of of performing, but then we have to deal with ego problems. And and so, you know, a big ego gets them in the way of performance and especially if you're on a team. And so going back to what I just said, the beginning of my journey was, basically destruction of of my ego. And that's what I'm looking for in in in folks that I hire, people that are aware aware of self, aware of others, aware of the world, whether that be, you know, politically or globally, and and being able to, communicate communicate with clients and and communicate effectively, and look the part. And so, you know, that is that's what I would say is, the thing that kinda separates us and, you know, what I would suggest, to anyone, not just in security, but anyone, doing anything is is getting to become self aware and aware of others and aware of the world. Do you have a moment? Like Once you have that and you and you get outside
11
0,09:04,000 --> 0,09:15,000
Sorry. We got a little lag there, so I'll I'll start it over for the edit. I didn't mean to jump on either. It stopped. Do you have a moment, like, the the moment when you realize that?
12
0,09:15,000 --> 0,09:17,000
Did you did you mean to start over?
13
0,09:17,000 --> 0,09:37,000
No. No. I'll reask start over? No. You're good. You're good. I'm gonna I'll reask the question because I I jumped on you a little bit there and you weren't it paused. So, the question was, do you remember the moment or a moment where you realized I have to destroy ego? I have to take ego out of the equation.
14
0,09:37,000 --> 0,11:13,000
Yeah. And and, you know, we we talked about this last time, but it was, you know, it was after my career in the army when I was just down and out. You know, I I, I went out and did my my thing out on the land and and realized that I I needed to be the the best version of myself, the best, husband I could be, the best father I could be, the best man I could be, just the best person I could be. And, you know, when when you get into that mindset and and shed all the things that no longer serve you, then the true magic really happens in in one's life. Since realizing that, talking about the impact in your life, your business. Oh, well, I mean, it's it's it was the, the cornerstone, the it was the the the catalyst for everything else that has happened in my life. You know? I would say, pre five years ago, I, again, I was in the in the darkest time of my life and, not awake, not aware, totally my own self. And releasing that and has really I mean, it's it's my life is completely different than than it was five years ago. And, you know, I get I get blessings and gifts every day. And it's, just it's been an amazing journey, and I'm I'm excited for the future.
15
0,11:13,000 --> 0,11:54,000
Love it. I love it. You know, in your in your journey, you kind of, you talk about this. You you've learned a lot. You've you've you've experienced a lot, and you you've been low and high and and somewhere in between and, you know, summarize the one piece of advice you would give to to anyone, maybe in in this specific anyone in thinking of becoming, actually, let's be specific on this. I think give advice to a veteran that once that's where you were, like, when you were low. What advice do they need to hear to do something and draw upon what they've learned from their time in the military?
16
0,11:54,000 --> 0,12:30,000
I'm gonna I'm gonna have to go back to a a piece of advice that a mentor of mine gave me. It's not it's not who you know, but who knows you. It's not who you know, but who knows you. So, you know, if you think you're hot, if you think you're special, and you, you know, you know all these people, you know, how many people of how many of those people are going to come come to your come to your aid when you when you need them. Right?
17
0,12:30,000 --> 0,12:43,000
That's solid. And one of the questions I do in these kind of rapid fire sessions is, you know you know, some of the best in business advice you gave. I I think that's a pretty good one is who knows you. But who gives you inspiration?
18
0,12:43,000 --> 0,13:00,000
That's my family. You know, going back to what I just said a second ago, that's my wife. That's my kids. That's that's me wanting to be the best version of myself for them. So I would have to say definitely my family. Awesome.
19
0,13:00,000 --> 0,13:13,000
From, you know, your I like I think people should educate themselves and learn stuff, but there's a lot of books and things you can read. What's one that you believe someone should you know, it's a must read for for at least an entrepreneur?
20
0,13:13,000 --> 0,13:53,000
So, specifically, in my field, I I'm in the middle of reading a book called Security LLC, which just came out a couple months ago, and it's, written by another one of my mentors, Meb West. And you can find it on Amazon. And it's it's just a great it's like a it's a bible for not not only establishing a security company, but anything. And then it talks about everything, but, you know, from marketing to insurance to unit you name it. It's in there. And that's that's something that I've really been focusing on as far as my business goes for sure.
21
0,13:53,000 --> 0,14:23,000
I like that. I mean, like, I think you find, not you, but anybody. It's good to read books in your industry that seem to be applicable across any business because because when you have that perspective, then you're getting, you know, and I also like reading books like that that aren't in my industry, but then you can draw the parallels of I should probably do that in my business too. Absolutely. Everything in I love that. Yeah. Yeah. A %. If there's a question I should've asked you today and I didn't, what's that question, and how do you answer it?
22
0,14:23,000 --> 0,18:39,000
What are my concerns about about the industry, about the industry of security, which goes hand in hand and ties into everything in the in the life in life and in the world. My concerns, I've got a couple concerns with with specifically with the security industry. One, we are oversaturated, as far as large scale companies. Okay? A lot of large scale companies have bought out a lot of the smaller companies as does it usually you know, as per usual, and then they drop down the rates, to get business. And and so what that does for, smaller companies is it it it look. When a client is looking for security, okay, and they don't nobody knows how to find security, so you just go to Google or whatever and, and you type in security, for whatever wherever you're at, and a couple of these large scale companies will pop up, and it it overshadows, the smaller graph smaller fries. And and here's the thing with these larger companies. You know, they're they're hiring personnel that have zero experience, zero background, zero knowledge, zero professionalism, for pennies on the dollar. And and these are the ones that are falling asleep at the desk, not patrolling, not reporting. You know, these these are why we have security issues. So, look, if you want if you're a potential client and if you're potentially looking for security, just know you're gonna get what you pay for. Now if you are genuine concerned about, your security, your safety of yourself, your family, your business, your reputation, your brand, whatever that may be, if you're genuinely concerned, about that security, then you might need to dig a little bit deeper in your pocketbook because these guys that are getting paid for nothing, they don't care. You know, so you get what you pay for. That's why I care about the quality of service, and we we we have that experience. We're gonna do the job that you are paying us to do effect not only effectively, but at the most optimal level. So that's the first thing I would say. And then the second thing I would say is, as far as technology is concerned, AI. You know, artificial intelligence, we didn't create AI. AI was just waiting to be discovered, just like math or anything else. And we are at a point, you know, this is we're only four years into really, to to the public really being able to to use AI, and nobody really knows what they're doing. So I think that's a concern. I mean, not to sound cuckoo, but, you know, we are on we are on the if if we don't look. It AI is like is a tool. Right? It's it's just like a firearm. Okay? And a tool in the hands of someone with good intentions is is gonna be used for good and vice versa. And so it's up to, whoever is holding that power. And so with that being said, you know, I think in four years, it's three or four years, it's quadrupled its its capabilities. And there's no regulations on it. And I think it's a a wonderful tool and a powerful tool, obviously, that we can capitalize on, but I think we need to take a step back and, really observe and study and research and try to use this tool to the best of our ability without, causing harm.
23
0,18:39,000 --> 0,18:59,000
Yeah. That's, I don't think I I'll I'll add to that. It's I don't think people realize it's a nascent technology right now. It's powerful as it is. It's nascent. And and and then that's that's that's what's scary. It's as powerful as that is already. It's like, oh, wow. That's that's we don't know much about that.
24
0,18:59,000 --> 0,19:25,000
What people don't realize is, you know, the technology that you have at your disposal right now, it's been around for decades. It's just now coming out to the public, and that goes with weaponry or anything, you know, frequency, weapons. You know, all the stuff that people are seeing these days in tech in the tech world
25
0,19:25,000 --> 0,19:51,000
on on the public in the public sector has been out in a and being used. Oh, yeah. By the time the public knows of something, it's been around for a long it like, at that point, it's like, I'd say obsolete because there's something else that's replaced it, so it's okay to get it out in public. Yeah. The the biggest weapon of things best kept. Conscious time. Shameless plug for you. Right? How do people get ahold of you and who should be trying to get ahold of you?
26
0,19:51,000 --> 0,20:12,000
Yeah. You can get ahold of us, on our website, or our email. Our email is info@SpectreDefenseSolutions.com, and that is also our website. And that's called it's spelled s p e c t r e defense solutions dot com.
